Apple Watch Series 12: expected date, upgrades, and what we know before Apple’s event

Apple has confirmed its next event, not the Series 12. This report separates official facts from reporting around the chip, health, design, battery, Touch ID, ceramic cases, and pricing.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Apple Watch Series 12 has not been announced. The latest reporting places it at Apple’s September 9 event and points to a performance, health, and fitness update rather than a sweeping redesign. A ceramic case now looks more plausible; Touch ID, battery life, sensors, and price remain unresolved.

01 / Starting point

Has Apple confirmed the Apple Watch Series 12?

No. Apple’s Newsroom post confirms an event on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. It does not name Apple Watch Series 12 or disclose a design, chip, health sensors, battery figure, price, or release date. The event date is official; the watch itself remains reported.

Reporting attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 at the event. MacRumors and 9to5Mac have relayed those details, but Apple could still change naming, configurations, or timing. The Apple event announcement remains the authoritative source for what the company has actually said.

PriceUnconfirmed. Series 11 officially starts at $399; every Series 12 number is an estimate.
ColombiaNo official date or price. Editorial planning range for an entry aluminum model: roughly COP 1.9–2.4 million.
How to read this table

“Reported” means a news source published the claim; it does not mean Apple confirmed it. The Colombia range is a budgeting scenario, not a quote, pre-order, or offer from FASE NUEVE.

03 / Official baseline

Series 11 tells us what Series 12 must improve

Apple launched Series 11 in September 2025 with 42mm and 46mm cases, aluminum or titanium options, an S10 chip, and a starting US price of $399. Apple rates it for up to 24 hours of normal use, with 15 minutes of charging providing up to eight hours.

Series 11 also brought 5G cellular support, hypertension notifications, sleep score, and twice the scratch resistance on the Ion‑X cover glass used by aluminum models. Those are official, current-generation features. Any Series 12 comparison should start there rather than relabeling existing capabilities as new.

04 / Form and comfort

A dramatic redesign now looks unlikely

Earlier leaks encouraged speculation about a more radical overhaul. The latest reporting attributed to Gurman instead says Series 12 should not look substantially different from Series 11. A bigger Apple Watch redesign may be another year or two away.

If that reporting is accurate, the thin case introduced with Series 10 and carried into Series 11 should remain the template. A 42mm and 46mm lineup is therefore the most conservative expectation, but that is an inference from design continuity—not an Apple specification.

Do not treat continuity as a spec sheet

There is no defensible basis yet for publishing exact weight, thickness, bezels, water resistance, color names, or band compatibility as Series 12 facts.

05 / Performance

A new chip may be the most meaningful internal change

The processor story is one of the better-supported hardware claims. Series 11 uses the S10 chip that first appeared in the prior generation. Leaked internal code pointed to a different CPU for the 2026 watch family, while current reporting expects the first noticeable Apple Watch performance step in several years.

Branding remains unsettled: sources use both S11 and S12. There are no official benchmarks, memory figures, or efficiency claims. The accurate description is simply a new S-class chip with expected speed and efficiency gains.

STRONGEST HARDWARE SIGNAL

More headroom for apps, Siri, and health analysis

A modernized chip could improve responsiveness and on-device work, but the real benefit will depend on watchOS 27, sensor behavior, and power management.

06 / Health and activity

Health upgrades may focus on continuous context, not a headline sensor

Gurman has repeatedly described health and fitness improvements as a focus for Series 12. One feature under test would let the heart-rate sensor collect information continuously throughout the day. Apple is also reported to be reworking how Health and Fitness surface wellness metrics, closer to the broader context offered by services such as Whoop and Oura.

That is not confirmation of a new medical sensor. Series 11 already supports heart-rate tracking, ECG, blood oxygen in supported markets, hypertension notifications, sleep apnea notifications, wrist temperature, and sleep score. Full blood-pressure measurement, glucose sensing, a sensor-equipped band, and any new diagnosis remain unconfirmed for Series 12.

WHAT HAS MORE SUPPORT

Tracking and interpretation before a new diagnosis

  • Fitness improvements are reported.
  • Continuous heart-rate collection is being tested.
  • Health and Fitness may surface richer context.
  • Specific new sensors remain unconfirmed.

07 / Conflicting rumor

Touch ID has evidence behind the rumor—but not enough to call it likely

The Touch ID story began with “AppleMesa” references, Apple’s internal naming for its fingerprint system, found in code associated with future watches. That produced two theories: a sensor under the display or one built into the side button.

The trail is inconsistent. One leaker rejected the claim, current no-redesign reporting does not support it, and Gurman did not include Touch ID in his latest expected feature list. The appropriate status is unconfirmed and currently less likely.

08 / Materials

A ceramic case is the clearest possible visual differentiator

Bloomberg reporting, relayed by MacRumors and 9to5Mac, says Apple has been testing a return to ceramic for the Series line. White and dark-gray versions are said to have existed in testing. It is not clear whether both will ship, whether ceramic will be a limited premium tier, or whether the plan could move to 2027.

This is different from the ceramic coating Apple applies to Series 11’s Ion‑X glass: the rumor concerns the full case material. Past ceramic Apple Watch Edition models sat far above aluminum pricing, which is why publishing a Colombia estimate for this version would be misleading.

09 / Everyday use

Battery, sizes, and watchOS 27: the limits of what we know

Battery life

Apple has published no Series 12 battery figure. Some leaks describe a greater focus on battery capacity or efficiency, but that reporting is less firmly corroborated than the chip and health stories. There is no sound basis to promise more than Series 11’s official 24-hour rating.

Case sizes

42mm and 46mm are the low-risk expectation if the existing case continues. Exact dimensions, weights, and material options remain unknown.

watchOS 27

Apple has officially previewed watchOS 27 with new health and fitness insights, Workout Buddy in Spanish, expanded menstrual health support, improved run tracking, and a new generation of Siri. A September watch would logically debut on the new software, but Apple has not yet published a compatibility list naming Series 12.

10 / Budget

How much could Apple Watch Series 12 cost?

There is no official price. The verified baseline is Series 11: Apple launched the 42mm aluminum GPS model at $399, while the regular 46mm price is $429. Without an announcement, a cautious entry scenario is $399–449, with higher prices for larger cases, cellular connectivity, and premium materials. This is editorial planning, not a leaked MSRP.

For local context, Mac Center listed the 42mm aluminum GPS Series 11 from COP 1,859,000 and the 46mm model around COP 2,099,000 when this report closed. Those prices may include promotions and can change; they are not Series 12 or FASE NUEVE prices.

How the Colombia range was built

We combined Series 11’s official US starting price, public Colombian channel references, normal launch uncertainty, and likely differences by size, connectivity, and material. We did not multiply a US number by an exchange rate and present the result as a local retail price.

Colombian availability may also trail the global announcement. Until Apple and local channels publish configurations, warranty, timing, and a total price, every Series 12 figure must remain labeled as an estimate.

11 / Buying decision

Should you wait for Series 12 or buy Series 11?

With the event only days away, waiting resolves a specific uncertainty: it lets you compare official specifications, pricing, and availability instead of buying on rumor. That is the stronger path for anyone interested in the new chip, a possible ceramic model, or health changes—and who does not need a watch immediately.

Series 11 is the known quantity. It offers 24-hour battery life, 42mm and 46mm sizes, mature health features, and visible retail discounts. It can still be a sensible purchase when the discount is meaningful and those capabilities already meet the need.

The practical rule

Do not buy Series 11 out of fear of a price increase, and do not wait for Series 12 solely for an unconfirmed feature. Compare final price, actual use, and official differences after the event.

Sources and methodology

This report closed on August 30, 2026. Apple is the source for official facts. Bloomberg reporting is assessed through MacRumors and 9to5Mac coverage, while code leaks and single-source claims are kept in a lower-confidence category. Once Apple announces the product, official information should replace these estimates.
